CHAPTER TWENTY TWO
âBabe, is something bothering you?â Krystal asked.
Gabe felt a bolt that was equal parts fear and frustration hit him in the gut. Heâd really been hoping to keep it off his face and out of his body language, but apparently Krystal was just as good at reading him as he was at reading her.
He took a bite of the street taco heâd bought to give him some more time to consider his response as they walked slowly down Main Street.
The session had gone well.
It had been just over an hour and hadnât hurt as much as heâd feared. It probably helped that he was distracted telling the story of how he met all the amazing women in his life. And Jen and Lorelei had several questions between them.
Krystal had gotten a tattoo of Death, hooded and shadowed and carrying a scythe, in the same place he was getting his own tat: on her left bicep. Apparently, Chloe had been considering getting one and that was what she wanted, but she was pretty nervous about it and how it might actually look in real life, so Krystal had offered to get it and show her.
Once theyâd finished up and gotten some healthcare tips on the tattoo, he and Krystal had hit up the next part of their date: street food.
Main Street in their town came equipped with a ton of food trucks and most of them, apparently, were pretty good.
âI was kinda waiting to tell everyone else,â he said. Now Krystal looked at him more intently. He sighed. âI didnât want to interfere with our date day.â
Now she stopped, looked around, and then brought him over to a bench. They sat down together. âTell me.â
âMy dad called me yesterday, while Chloe and I were at the gaming tournament. I didnât recognize the number, so I didnât answer. He left a message.â
â...what did he want?â Krystal asked cautiously, and from her tone he could tell immediately that she did not feel on stable ground.
They hadnât talked much about his parents, enough to know the broad strokes, but he wondered how much Ellen might have told her.
âTo meet. Heâs divorced from my mom now.â
â...and what do you want?â
He chuckled, he couldnât help it. âUh...I donât know. Iâm ninety nine percent in the camp of: nothing. I donât want to break the streak of not talking to him, seeing him, or hearing from him. But...I donât know, part of me is curious to hear what he has to say. I doubt itâs going to be anything of consequence, and probably he wants something, but I dunno. Iâm...curious.â
âDo you think itâd be a good idea?â
âProbably not. Iâm still processing.â
âRightâ¦â Another long pause. âIâm sorry, Iâm not good with this. I never knew my dad. He disappeared before I began forming memories, and apparently died ten years later without ever being involved in my life at all.â
âItâs all right. Sometimes weâre gonna run into stuff that we arenât equipped for. Iâm still thinking on it.
